Are Schools Allowing AI? How to Find Out What’s Permitted

Yes, many schools allow some uses of AI, but permission depends on the school, teacher, assignment, and tool. A student might be allowed to use AI to brainstorm questions or practice a concept while being required to write a final essay independently, so the most useful question is not simply whether AI is allowed, but what kind of use is allowed for this task.

Start with the school’s student technology or academic integrity policy, then ask the teacher how it applies to a particular assignment: Can your child use AI for ideas, feedback, or editing, and must they disclose that use? If instructions are unclear, encourage your child to ask before submitting work rather than assuming that a tool permitted in one class is permitted in another.

When AI use is permitted, have your child treat its responses as suggestions to evaluate, not answers to copy: they should verify claims, do the thinking the assignment is meant to assess, and follow any citation or disclosure rules. Before your child enters a prompt, remind them not to share passwords, private family details, or another student’s information, and to use any school-approved account or tool when one is required.

Our team created AI in Schools: What Every Parent Needs to Know, a digital parent guide about AI in classrooms, privacy, benefits, and risks; you can also read our guide to AI in schools for more context. Use those topics to shape a conversation with your child about what helps them learn, what crosses an assignment boundary, and when they should ask a teacher for clarification.
