What Is It Called When You Can Walk Through Something?

When you can physically walk through a place or opening, you can say it is passable or accessible on foot ; the action itself is often called traversing, crossing, or passing through. The best word depends on what you are moving through: you might traverse a field, pass through a doorway, or walk through a shallow stream.

If you mean walking through a solid object as though it were not there, the fictional ability is often called phasing or intangibility . In ordinary speech, though, “walk through” usually describes moving through a space rather than passing through solid material.

Check the product’s listed specifications when evaluating what does it mean to walk through something.

Use “passable” when you want to describe a route that can be traveled, as in “the trail is passable,” or “traversable” when you want a more formal word for terrain you can cross. “Accessible” can also describe a place you can enter, although it may refer to specific accessibility needs rather than simply having an opening.

A “walkthrough” has a different meaning: it can be an inspection, a guided tour, or a step-by-step explanation of a task. For example, our team might walk you through boot care by explaining each step, even though you are not physically walking through anything.

When you plan to walk through mud, rain, or a shallow crossing, consider the conditions underfoot as well as whether your footwear is suited to them. Choose boots that fit securely without pinching, leave room for your toes, and provide traction appropriate for the surface; avoid crossing water when you cannot judge its depth or current.

For footwear care, start by removing loose dirt and letting wet boots dry away from direct heat, then follow the care instructions for their materials. Leather, suede, and synthetic uppers can require different treatments, so choose a waterproofing product intended for the material rather than assuming one treatment works for every boot.

If you want a footwear-care walkthrough before heading outdoors, our featured Walk Through Any Weather With Confidence eBook and outdoor checklist are designed around boot waterproofing and dry-feet preparation. You can also visit our boot waterproofing guide for the featured resource.

Before treating your boots, inspect the soles and seams for wear and clean the uppers according to their material. Let the footwear dry as directed, apply a suitable treatment according to its instructions, and allow any recommended drying time before wearing the boots.
