Is Alexa a Smart Home Device? How It Works

Alexa is Amazon’s voice assistant, not a standalone piece of hardware, so the answer depends on what you mean by “device.” You can use Alexa through a compatible device, such as an Amazon Echo smart speaker, to ask questions, set reminders, and control supported smart home products with your voice. The speaker is the physical smart home device; Alexa is the assistant you speak to through it.

Alexa can be a convenient way to operate connected lights, plugs, and other supported products without opening a separate app for each one. Before buying something you hope to control by voice, confirm that it works with Alexa and think about how you would use it if the internet or power went out. For everyday lighting, a familiar wall switch or lamp switch can remain an important option.

Voice control may be helpful when reaching a switch or navigating an app is inconvenient, but essential tasks should not depend on someone remembering an exact command. Choose tasks around the person’s routines rather than adding devices simply because they can be connected.
