AI Software in Schools: Tools Parents Should Know

Schools use different kinds of AI software rather than one standard program: you may encounter writing assistants, tutoring tools that adjust practice questions, translation or accessibility tools, and software that helps teachers plan lessons or review student work. Some AI runs inside a familiar classroom platform, so your child may use it without opening a separate chatbot.

A school may approve tools for a specific grade, subject, or task, while a teacher may use a different tool for preparation that students never access. The distinction matters because a student-facing chatbot raises different questions about age-appropriate use, accuracy, and what your child types into it than a teacher-only lesson-planning tool does.

Ask for the names of the AI tools your child can access, whether their use is required or optional, and which assignments allow AI assistance. You can also ask what student information the tools collect, whether conversations are retained, and whom to contact if you want to discuss an alternative for your child.

If AI is permitted for schoolwork, ask your child to use it for practice or brainstorming while following the teacher’s rules for submitted work. Encourage them to verify factual claims, protect personal information, and tell a teacher when an AI answer is confusing or seems wrong; our AI in Schools: What Every Parent Needs to Know parent guide covers the benefits, risks, and privacy questions you may want to discuss at home.
