What Dog Breeds Should You Avoid? Focus on Fit

Rather than making a universal “avoid” list, we recommend ruling out dogs whose exercise, training, grooming, or space needs you cannot meet consistently. A Border Collie or Belgian Malinois may be a poor fit if you want a low-key companion and cannot provide substantial daily activity and mental stimulation, while a laid-back dog still needs regular walks and attention.

Check the product’s listed specifications when evaluating avoid breeds whose daily needs do not fit your life.

Dogs with very short muzzles, such as French Bulldogs and Pugs, can be more vulnerable to breathing and heat-related problems, so you should consider your climate, activity plans, and ability to manage veterinary care before choosing one. Large and giant breeds can bring different demands, including more food, larger equipment, and the need to protect growing joints from inappropriate exercise.

If you have small pets, consider how you would manage a dog with a strong prey drive; if you have young children or frequent visitors, consider the individual dog’s comfort with handling, noise, and new people. Breed tendencies are useful starting points, but we would not judge an individual dog by its breed alone: age, socialization, training, and personality matter, too.

You may want to avoid a heavy-shedding breed if you cannot keep up with brushing and cleaning, or a coat that needs professional grooming if those appointments would be difficult to maintain. Before committing, compare your housing rules, budget, and available time with the dog’s likely needs, then meet the individual dog and ask specific questions about its behavior and care history.

Our approach is to choose a dog you can care for on ordinary weekdays—not just one that appeals to you in a photo or during a weekend outing.
