What Is a Dog’s Favorite Toy? Let Them Show You

There is no single toy every dog loves most: one dog may chase a ball at every opportunity, while another would rather carry a soft toy from room to room. To find your dog’s favorite, offer a few different toy types one at a time and notice which one they return to when you are not directing the game.

Check the product’s listed specifications when evaluating a dog’s favorite toy is the one they choose again.

If your dog likes running after moving objects, a toy you can toss may be more appealing than one that stays put; if they prefer sniffing and searching, a toy that supports that kind of play may hold their attention longer. Our Interactive Plush Dog Snuffle Toy Set play guide is a place to start if you want to explore a different way to play together.

Size and play style matter as much as appearance: a toy should be large enough that your dog cannot swallow it, and a dog that tears into fabric needs closer supervision with plush toys than a dog that gently carries them. Our team suggests watching the first few play sessions so you can see whether your dog engages comfortably and whether the toy stays intact.

Put away any toy with loose pieces, exposed stuffing, or damage that could make it unsafe, and follow its care instructions when cleaning it. You can also rotate a few suitable toys instead of leaving every option out all the time, then use your dog’s response to decide which games are worth bringing back.

A toy does not have to be elaborate to become a favorite, and your dog’s preference may change with their age, energy, or mood. We recommend paying attention to what they do with a toy—not just whether they approach it once—so you can choose more of the play they genuinely enjoy.
