Highest-Rated Car Seat Brand? How to Choose Safely

No one brand is the highest rated for every child and vehicle: ratings vary by car seat model, seat type, and the criteria used to evaluate it. If you are choosing between brands such as Graco, Chicco, and Britax, compare specific seats that suit your child’s size and your vehicle rather than treating a brand name as a safety rating.

Start with your child’s height and weight, then look for a seat with appropriate limits and a rear-facing setup that you can use for as long as the seat permits. When you compare models, consider how clearly you can follow the installation instructions and how easily you can secure the harness correctly on every ride; a highly rated seat is not a good choice for you if it cannot be installed and used as directed.

Our featured Baby Stroller & Car Seat Cushion with Head Protection for Newborns is an accessory, not a car seat, so it should not influence which car seat brand you choose. Do not add a cushion or other padding inside a car seat unless that seat’s manufacturer explicitly approves it for your exact model and its instructions explain how to use it; our guide to newborn stroller cushions and car seat safety walks through the distinction.
